Tara’s Story

Before 3 year-old Tara came to the YMCA she was very shy and seemed sad and lonely.  She never left her mom’s side, and had little interaction with other children.  Tara’s family were newcomers to Canada, they had little resources and spoke little English. Tara’s parents were also going through a separation and Tara had not seen her father in a long time.   So many of the things that you and I take for granted, such as a stable family home, friends to play with and not having to cope with a language barrier just weren’t possible for little Tara.

Fortunately, Tara’s mom was able to received financial assistance from the YMCA to register her in our child and youth programs.  At first, Tara was reluctant to take part, however, she was attracted to the cheerful and friendly environment of the YMCA.   Within a few months, Tara’s life turned around.  Rather than hiding behind her mom, she began to socialize and take part in all activities.  Our child and youth programs taught Tara to be confident and helped her to feel included.  Really, what the YMCA provided her was a caring environment, a chance to express herself and an opportunity to belong.

Now, Tara is thriving.  She has made a lot of friends, and is a very happy and active young girl.  Tara’s mom says life will never be the same.  Tara’s mom is grateful for what the YMCA has given her daughter.  “Tara wouldn’t be the person she is today without the YMCA Strong Kids campaign”.

The YMCA Strong Kids Campaign is a fundraising campaign which seeks to raise money to support kids and youth who need Y financial assistance. At the YMCA, we believe that everyone should be able to participate in our programs regardless of their ability to pay the fees. We focus on providing children and their families with the tools they need to succeed in life.
